St. Jordi's Day in Barcelona

stjordi.jpgThe 23rd of April is approaching. Do you happen to stay in a Barcelona Hotel or a Barcelona holiday apartment during that time? Then you should participate in this local tradition - the St. Jordi's day is a bit like Valentine's Day with a twist. The boys offer their girls red roses and the girls their boys a book. The part of offering roses can be traced back to the middle age where Saint George saved his beloved princess by killing a dragon. He took his sword and stabbed it into the dragon's heart. Instead of blood, a red rose came out of the dragon's heart. To see the full legend you might want to go to the Guasch Teatre to see the play of the Legend of Saint George. The tradition of giving books to the boys was introduced by a bookseller in 1923, who promoted the day to honor the deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare, both also on the April 23. Also, when you stay at a Barcelona apartment, you might want to go to one of the many local bakeries to try the St. Jordi's day cake. Yummy!

Alegria: a magical show in Barcelona

Alegría, which means joy, some kind of euphoria, is a great production that transfers the public to other times in which fantasy and magic were part of the daily life. The power of live music and the poetry of the images created by the artists of this Canadian company make the spectacle a sublime representation of beauty. A celebration of life, a carnival where the artists want to fly more and higher. The Cirque du Soleil performances are known all over the world due of its amazing acrobatics, creativity, light and sound effects, stage scenes and the music. One of their best features is that they don?t use animals with its performances. The idea of this circus is to redefine the rules of the traditional circus, innovating and looking for new limits.

Four Spanish artists take part in the Cirque du Soleil. Altogether 53 artists form the staff of that famous circus.
Every month, the Cirque du Soleil have castings in which head-hunters search the best artists, dancers and specialists in all the fields of the circus expression. Among them, there are many ex high competition sportsmen and sportswomen. These artists come from more than 40 countries and they speak more than 25 different languages. Nowadays the company has about 3,000 employees in the world: artists, musicians and technicians of around 40 countries. Until now they have produced more than thirteen spectacles and two films: Alegría inspired by the name of the present performance, filmed in 1997, Journey of Man, shut in the year 2000 and Midnight Sun that became in 2004. The author of the show is Guy Laliberté, born in Quebec City in 1959. With the help of a small band of kindred spirits, Laliberté recognized and groomed the talents of the street entertainers from the Fête foraine de Baie-Saint-Paul and created Cirque du Soleil in 1984.

Already a multitalented artist, Guy Laliberté quickly dove into the business world to plan and maintain the growth of the young company. He was the first to orchestrate the marriage of cultures and artistic and acrobatic disciplines that is the hallmark of Cirque du Soleil.
Thanks to its founder's vision and talent for bringing people together, Cirque du Soleil has become an international organization, as much in terms of its makeup as in the scope of its activities and influence. Guy Laliberté now heads an organization with activities on five continents.

Come and enjoy the show. For more comfort, we can help you finding an accommodation in Barcelona, which means Barcelona apartments or Barcelona hotels. The magical atmosphere of Alegria should not to missed, so book now until the end of its representation on April 29th.

Los Reyes Magos ? The Three Kings in Barcelona

Los Reyes Magos ? or the Three Kings are celebrated on the day of Epiphany the 6th of January.
In all Spanish-speaking countries there is the tradition that children write wish letters to the Magi. The night before Epiphany these wishes come true and the Magi bring gifts and sweets. This tradition can be compared to Santa Clause who brings presents in northern European countries. To thank the Magi children and their parents prepare drinks and food for the Kings and their camels.
In Barcelona the day of ?Los Reyes Magos? is already celebrated the night before. The night of 5th January the Kings arrive by boat to Barcelona where the Mayor first greets them. Afterwards there is a parade from the Park de la Ciutadella to the Olympic Stadium. The Kings throw candies and sweets to children standing along the way and admiring the show. In Gran Via there is also a special Fair taking place ? ?La Feria de los Reyes?. During two days children and their parents can visit the numerous stands selling sweets and toys. To find the way to the Gran Via by Metro just take a look at the Barcelona Metro Map.It is a further tradition to eat a special cake ?Roscón de Reyes?. This cake contains a small figure of a Magus. The person who has the figure in his cake is said to be lucky all the year.If you would like to spend your holidays during this time of the year and enjoy the special atmosphere of the Reyes Magos in Barcelona just book a Barcelona apartment or hotel.

La Feria de Abril de Catalunya

Have you already heard about La Feria de Abril de Catalunya? No? Well, then you will have the opportunity to discover it in Barcelona from the 28th of April to the 7th of May on the esplanade of the Forum.
La Feria de Abril comes from Sevilla and its goal is to promote the Andalousian culture. There, you are simply uplifted by the warm atmosphere of South of Spain : tasting churros, dancing flamenco, hearing castanets and enjoying other typical Andalousian attractions. There will probably be, like last year, a procession of horsemen glittering in their colourful costums. Anyway, I really recommend you to go have a look, get to know more about Andalousia and have a lot of fun!
No worries to go there, you have the subway, line 4 and the service will be reinforced. Free shuttles from and to Plaça Catanunya will also be made available to all. Now the thing is just to find a nice place to stay, and I know some hotels not so far from the event. One of them is the Hotel Barcelona Princess, it's a really nice and comfortable hotel.
