Easter in Barcelona

If you happen to visit Barcelona during Easter then you will enjoy a Spanish version of Easter. Easter week in Barcelona is called 'Semana Santa' meaning holy week. The holy week begins from Palm Sunday known as Domingo de Ramos in Spain. This year the Palm Sunday falls on 1st April 2012 and Good Friday falls on 6th April.

easter barcelona.jpgThe holy week will end on 8th April is called Lunes de Pascua or Dilluns de Pasqua (Easter Monday). Easter holiday is an interesting and cultural period in Barcelona due to the Christian traditions that dictate Easter should be adhered to and celebrated. Locals living in Barcelona usually leave the city because their families live in nearby towns and villages. Researchers have estimated that around 600,000 people leave the city, no wonder this mass exodus is called operation "Salida". It means operation exit.

Easter will come with a warm and gentle spring, a season which tourists can immensely enjoy during the parade. Many Easter-related parades are held in Barcelona. Since it is a holiday, be prepared to see a huge crowd when waiting for the parade. These parades are organized by the "Cofradias", meaning brotherhood of lay people. These are men and women blessed especially by the church to organize the processions. The Easter parade is called "Pasos", it means steps or passage. One of the largest and oldest procession takes place in the community of Hospitalet de Llobregat (metro blue 15). It can be dated back to 1977 and plenty of people participate in the procession annually. But I recommend assisting to the processions in Barrio Gotico, near Barcelona Cathedral on Viernes Santo, Holy Friday.

mona de pascua.jpgEaster is also the perfect time to enjoy some of the local food. Christians don't eat any meat on Good Friday, which is why seafood is eaten more this time around. The most popular seafood during Good Friday is Cod. If seafood is not your thing then you can wait till Monday to enjoy the variety of dessert made especially for Easter. You can stop by bakeries and chocolates shops that will have all the Easter treats like Mones, Bunyels, Torrijas, Rosca de Pascua, Pestinos and who could forget the Mona de Pascua.

The last dish is a unique Catalonian culinary tradition. It is a cocoa cake with chocolate topping, in the form of a big doughnut. Originally the empty space in the donuts was used to fill boiled eggs but now a variety of other decorations are used. This is why Easter in the capital of Spain is going to be an interesting one because you will get to see and enjoy Spanish tradition and food.

They amount 60 to 70 and are composed of different organizations and groups from banks to political parties and private organizations. In those tents you will find people partying, eating, singing and dancing "Sevillanas", the traditional dance of Andalusia. In this dancing everyone is involved from grandchildren to grandparents, and is costumed traditionally. The men wear the "traje de corto" ( short jacket, tight trousers and boots) and the ladies wear "faralaes" or "trajes de flamenco", which is a flamenco style dress. Between dances the Spanish families sit together at big tables eating tapas, jerez cherry and manzanilla and drinking wine. nit-de-sant-joan-2011-barcelona_jpg-c27c950570bdb6d81844da63c577b2eb.jpgIn ancient times the summer solstice was considered the most important event of the solar year. The element of fire stands as the symbol of abundance, purity and fertility as it is today one of the central elements in the Festival of San Joan. The festival is marked by fireworks and bonfires enlightening the skies of Barcelona. Don´t miss it, take the opportunity to do a trip to the European metropolis and book a central Barcelona hotel or Barcelona apartment.

Coming back to the festival of San Joan, the element of this festival is fire. The flame to light the fires is called the "Flama del Canigó," which is taken to different villages every year. There are bonfires, called "hogueras" in Spanish or "fogueres" in Catalan everywhere in Barcelona and Catalonia. If you like to follow one of the traditions, take part in the rituals of fire purification, which are said to cleanse your sins and get rid of your bad luck by burning something. For the bonfire old furniture is often used to symbolize a gesture of "out with the old - in with the new!

sant-joan3.jpg A big part of any Catalan festival is the food. During San Joan it is a tradition to eat Catalan 'Coca' desserts. Coca is a bread base stuffed with various kinds of fillings. The size of the bread should be twice as long as it is wide!

During this period there also will be San Joan parties in every club and bar in Barcelona. Due to this the Barcelona metro and trams are open all night on 23rd June, which is a big plus because the taxis in Barcelona usually charge an extra supplement of around 5€ between midnight and 06.00.

Sa Pobla Festival in Barcelona

Taking place every year on the last weekend in January, the exciting Sa Pobla Festival takes place in the Gracia quarter in Barcelona. During the Sa Pobla Festival in Barcelona, people dress up in costumes, often as red devils, and play drums to honour San Antoni.

Dancing around bonfires with drum music this bizarre event reminds you of secret medieval rituals, but it is an experience in Barcelona you should not miss during holidays in a Barcelona apartment in Gracia.

However, as scary and funny looking as this event in Barcelona might seem, the Sa Pobla Festival in Barcelona is held in honour to the patron saint of animals, the earlier mentioned San Antoni and therefore is really a good festival in Barcelona.

Sant_antoni_by_Juan_Costa.jpg

The Sa Pobla Festival in Barcelona is celebrated heavily also on the Balearic Islands, on Ibiza, Menorca and especially Majorca on the 17th January, known as San Antoni Festival. And with the Gracia Quarter of Barcelona having a large population with Majorca origins, it is no wonder that Sa Pobla Festival is also celebrated in Gracia, Barcelona. (Read here about San Antoni Festival Majorca)

But if you want to visit the Sa Pobla Festival during your Barcelona holidays, keep in mind that during the warm and funny atmosphere at the festival, people traditionally shout and sing not always age appropriate verses and phrases while dancing around the fires.

However, what you can also expect at the Sa Pobla Festival in Barcelona is the celebration of Majorca culture as well, perfect if you want to spend your holidays in Barcelona, but also want to get to know about other parts in Spain, or if you want to experience Majorca traditions and events.  Of course the traditional correfoc (fireruns) of Barcelona are part of this exceptional event in Barcelona.

187584637_5dc2c8bdb7_o.jpgTypical dishes during the Sa Pobla are the sobresada, a cake made with meat inside and the espinagada, another cake but with vegetables and eel.  This event symbolizes the metropolitan feel of Barcelona, this time connected with Majorca culture and with the location in Gracia, known to be the artistic quarter of Barcelona; this experience should not be missed during your Barcelona holidays in Spain.

If you stay in your Gracia apartment in Barcelona, you can also visit other sights in Barcelona. The Park Guell is also famous in this area and you should not forget to visit this sight. The park is located at a hill, so it can be a little bit strenuous to arrive at the park. Read my article about the Park Guell in Barcelona to find out how to get there more easily.

If you decide to visit the Sa Pobla Festival in Barcelona or the Gracia district in general, take the green L3 metro and step out at Fontana, which is located quite central in Gracia. On the other hand, if you like to take walks and admire the architecture of Barcelona buildings, especially in the artsy Gracia, you can step out at Diagonal metro station (crossed by the blue L5, green L3 and brown/dark blue L7) and start your tour there.

The Sa Poble Festival in Barcelona in January is a pleasure every year, celebrating not only the San Antonio saint, but also Majorcan traditions in Barcelona's Gracia district. Prepare yourself to dress up as a devil and dance around the fire during this Barcelona event in your Barcelona holidays!

Bar%C3%A7a1_by_caUsuariJolle.pngFC Barcelona's rival Rubin Kazan is based in Kazan, the capital of the federal subject of Russia Republic of Tatarstan. Rubin Kazan is the winner of the Russian Premier League 2009, so it will be interesting and exciting to watch them against FC Barcelona 2010. Of course FC Barcelona is a worthy competitor, being winner of the 2009 FIFA World Cup.

I suggest Barcelona accommodation near the Camp Nou to have easy access to the stadium. But of course you can also plan your vacation in Barcelona in another district, the Barcelona metro is well distributed throughout the city.

To get to the Camp Nou Barcelona in order to watch the exciting FC Barcelona match, you can take the L5 (blue line) and step out at Collblanc. You could also use the Tramvia to see the FC Barcelona vs Rubin Kazan 2010 match; then you can take T1, T2 or T3 and step out at Avenida de Xile or Ernest Lluch. To use the Tramvia also means that you can see more during your vacation in Barcelona, so that might be a good solution!

The Fira de Santa Llucia Christmas Market in Barcelona is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Spain. The first official mention of this market was in 1786, but probably it is much older. It is a part of the rich culture and traditions of Barcelona and if you are on vacation in Barcelona on that time, you should visit it.

Considering the fact that the Fira de Santa Llucia Christmas Market 2010 is from 27th November to 23rd December, it should be easy to find good Barcelona holiday rentals during that time. You can either book online a Barcelona hotel for a weekend or a Barcelona apartment for a week if you fully want to enjoy the Christmas market in this wonderful city!

4041760-Barcelona_Cathedral-Barcelona.jpgDuring the Fira de Santa Llucia Christmas Market in Barcelona you can find up to 300 different stalls, where you can buy little figurines for your nativity scene called "figuritas de Belén". Belén is the Spanish name for a crib as well as Bethlehem. These beautiful handcrafted figures have their own charm and make also a perfect souvenir for your friends and family! You can also buy greenery and plants to decorate your home with and furthermore you find other crafts to admire and gaze at.

Usually you can also participate in different events, such as making your own figurine, watch a giant Tio figure or listen to Christmas carols and stories and enjoying performances. The Tió de Nadal, or Christmas log is also a wonderful tradition and custom in Barcelona! Be sure to buy one at the Fira de Santa Llucia to bring it back to your home. If you feed it every day and cover it at night to make him comfortable, who knows...maybe you get some delicious candies, nuts or the traditional turron on Christmas day! It is similar to the chocolate calendars found in some countries of Europe.

But did you know that in Spain, the children do not get any presents until January 6th? On this day, they wait for the Three Kings to bring them presents. So no Santa Claus in Spain!

However, if you want to spend your Christmas holidays in Barcelona, do not miss this wonderful Christmas market 2010 in Barcelona!  After or before a enjoying and warming walk over the Fira de Santa Llucia, which is held in front of the Barcelona Cathedral, you can walk around the stunning Barcelona Gothic quarter to admire the architecture. During Christmas time, it will be a pleasure to walk through the streets and alleys and maybe warm your insides up by drinking a hot chocolate in the many cafes and bars.

460px-Cagatio.jpgBe sure and book your Barcelona holiday rental early enough to enjoy the Christmas market the most. I suggest a Barcelona apartment or a Barcelona hotel in the Gothic Quarter, so that you have a walking distance to the market. But you can also book other accommodation in Barcelona and take the metro. The stations near to the Barcelona Cathedral are Jaume I (yellow line L4), Liceu (green L3) and Plaza Catalunya (red L1, green L3 and purple L2).

Twice a year, there is a football game in Spain which is one of the most important and legendary games, the match FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2010, the battle of the giants. And on 29th November 2010 the match will take place in the famous Camp Nou Barcelona. Because of this, El Clasico 2010 - the match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid takes place at Monday, November 29th. Prepare for that and enjoy this incredible football game!

El Clásico or the Classic, as this match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is called, dates back to 1902, when the first match between these football legends occurred. The Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona rivalry is therefore very old and the two football clubs regularly compete against each other in order to determine who the best team of Spain is. The Barcelona against Madrid matches can also be seen as a match between Catalonia and the rest of Spain.

Casillas_and_Puyol_by_Sandman888.jpgDuring the time of the matches, Barcelona will be visited by many fans wanting to see the highly anticipated football game, not only from Spain, but also from the whole world! A perfect occasion for a short trip holiday in Barcelona of course. Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona tickets usually sell out really fast, so book early to experience the most important football match in the world.

If you have the FC Barcelona tickets, it is wise to choose a Barcelona holiday rental close to the Camp Nou Stadium, as you can be sure that metros and other public transports are full. I suggest Barcelona hotels or apartments in Les Corts, because from there, you have a walking distance to the stadium. So a Barcelona Apartment Camp Nou is the best way to enjoy the match the most.

But of course, also Barcelona visitors who do not get the chance to purchase a ticket for Camp Nou can enjoy the match; the FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2010 game will be showed on big screens throughout the city. In any case, during your Barcelona holiday you will experience the city pulsating and vibrating. And besides the game, there is a lot to see and to do in Barcelona.

800px-Camp_nou_m%C3%A8s_que_un_club_by_Andrea_Buratti.jpgThe last football game between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona was in April 2010, with FC Barca as the clear winner scoring 0-2. Another famous piece of Barcelona's pride was the game against Real Madrid in May 2009, where FC Barca won and scored 6 goals!

So this El Clasico match of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid 2010 is really a must, whether you like football or not! The atmosphere in the city cannot be described, with numerous after parties (no matter how the results are) and an anticipating exaction. During your next holiday in Girona you should remember that!

But maybe is this the reason Shakira chose Catalunya's most famous holiday destination city, Barcelona, as location for her new video shoot? Yes, the video for the new Shakira single Loca was filmed in Barcelona in August! But of course Barcelona is one of the most popular locations for anything, with its famous parks, buildings, beaches, culture and many other sights. So you can start planning your Barelona holidays already!

If you stay in your Barcelona holiday rental, for example a Barcelona hotel or a Barcelona apartment, you can walk through the city and discover the places Shakira used for her new single Loca. And after that, or before, you can watch her incredible performance during the Shakira Concert in Barcelona 2010!

To best get to the location for the Shakira concert 2010 in Barcelona, the Palau Sant Jordi, you could use the green L3 or purple L2 metro line and step out at Poble Sec or Parallel. From there, you can walk slowly towards the Parc del Montjuic, where the Palau is located. The Palau Sant Jordi is very often host to concerts (e.g. the Sting Concert 2010, Lady Gaga Concert 2010), so you can be sure to spend a wonderful time there.

You can already purchase the tickets for the Shakira Concert in Barcelona through the official Shakira site, so book early enough! It is also wise to book a nice Barcelona apartment or hotel in advance, so you can choose the most suitable accommodation for you. Or maybe you want to explore Shakira's Catalan origins in a Girona hotel?

Caminada de Montjuic 2010

Starting on November 14th, all athletes or people who like to walk have the chance to participate in the Caminada de Montjuic 2010!

The Caminada de Monjtuic marathon is a yearly walk around Barcelona and the Montjuic Mountain which is about 10 km. Not only people who want to attend this Barcelona event will like it, visitors can also just watch the impressing number of people walking around the city. A perfect occasion to book a Barcelona apartment or a Barcelona hotel!

1283 people participated in the Caminada de Montjuic 2007, in 2008 there were 1771 and last year, during the Caminada de Montjuic 2009, 2161 people participated in this exciting event. You can see its popularity rising, so be prepared that this year there are going to be even more participants!

422px-Marathon_Barcelona_Catalunya_2007.jpgThe Caminada de Montjuic 2010 starts on 14th November at the Parc de les Tres Xemeneies, Barcelona at 9.30 am, with no necessary registration. You can easily get there by using the metro and stepping out at Parallel. The Parallel station is crossed by the green L3 and the purple L2.

If you decide to participate in this Barcelona event during your Barcelona holiday however, be aware that this walk can be strenuous and exhausting. You should have build up a decent condition and have trained in advance to avoid accidents or injuries. But you can also always stop and take a break!

When you plan your vacation in Barcelona and arrive a little bit earlier than November 14th, you could also train in one of the wonderful parks in Barcelona. The Parc del Montjuic is for example favored by many for that.

I also want to give a little bit general information for beginners in walking. Like mentioned before, it is important to have a enough condition and practice in walking. In case you feel insecure that you finish the Caminada de Montjuic, don't be ashamed to stop! Your health is more important! It is also wise to consult a doctor for a medical inspection, or a professional trainer in a gym club.

Because this sport event in Barcelona is gaining more and more popularity, you should be there an hour before it starts. This way you have enough time to prepare and warm up.
Besides that, the Caminada de Montjuic 2010 in Barcelona should be an exciting event and perfect if you want to experience sport activities during your Spain holiday in Barcelona!

International Jazz Festival in Barcelona

This year in October, the International Jazz Festival in Barcelona takes places again in Barcelona!

800px-Jimmy_Moliere.jpgThe 42nd Voll-Damm Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barcelona (the official name) will start on October 3rd and end on December 2nd throughout the whole city. So if you book a Barcelona holiday rental in the city, it practically doesn't matter where exactly, you can be sure that there is always a Jazz performance close to you!

Although the complete line-up still needs to be confirmed, you can nevertheless expect well-known names to perform on the International Jazz Festival in Barcelona! A confirmed name will be Jamie Cullum, perfoming in the Palau de la Musica Catalana on Friday, 26th November at 9:00 p.m.

The English singer-songwriter is known to largely improvise his gigs, also including different musical influences and combining it with Jazz. That is of course perfect for the International Jazz Festival in Barcelona. Don't miss him if you like the unexpected! According to the official website, the prices for tickets will range from 32€ to 65€, so keep that in mind if you want to use your Barcelona holidays for this event. But if you find Barcelona apartments cheap enough that shouldn't be a problem.

600px-Jamie_Cullum_at_Colours_of_Ostrava_2009.jpgAlso do not forget to check the official Jazz Festival in Barcelona website to keep you updated if a new performer is confirmed!

Depending on your personal preferences, you can choose the dates for your Barcelona holidays to match with other events. In December for example start a lot of Christmas markets in Barcelona, the largest one being the Feria de Santa Lucia where you can buy a lot of interesting and traditional souvenirs to give to family and friends (I wrote here about Christmas in Barcelona last year).

And you can also buy your other Christmas presents! I'm sure you know that Barcelona is a perfect location for shopping sprees with a lot of outlet stores and department stores.
So what do you think about combining your interest in the International Jazz Festival in Barcelona with Christmas shopping during your next holiday in Barcelona?

Sting Concert in Barcelona

Do you like concerts? Well, then it's time to already plan your Barcelona holidays in October!

Former "The Police" lead singer Sting is giving a concert in Barcelona 2010 on October 29th in the Palau Sant Jordi! The Palau Sant Jordi Barcelona is located in the Parc Del Montjuic and also used for sport games and matches.

You can get to the Stadion Palau Sant Jordi if you take the green L3 until Poble Sec or Parallel (the purple L2 also crosses this station). After the concert or even before could walk around the beautiful park or towards the Plaza Espanya, which is not too far away, while gazing at Barcelona's amazing monuments and architecture.

You can look for a hotel in Barcelona which is close, or if you look for a more low cost accommodation, you should search for a Barcelona apartment cheap enough but of course with a good quality.

Sting_ThePolice_2007.jpgFor Sting, it won't be the first time he sings in the Palau Sant Jordi Barcelona. In the summer of 1993 he already gave a performance with his Ten Summoner's Tales. For a Sting fan and those who want to become one it is a must to attend the Sting Concert 2010 Barcelona!

Sting was born in the United Kingdom and is a well-known singer, songwriter and also actor. His most famous songs include amongst many others the often covered Police song "Every Breath You Take", "Englishman in New York" (one of the many covers of this song is "Jamaican in New York), Desert Rose and Fragile. Sting even recorded a new version of "Fragile" called "Fragilidad" singing in Spanish for the musical project Rhythms del Mundo.

That would fit perfectly to your Barcelona vacation! The Sting concert 2010 in Barcelona is also a perfect occasion for a short weekend trip to the beautiful Barcelona.

As mentioned before, the concert takes places on Friday, 29th October. On the rest of the weekend you can enjoy your accommodation in Barcelona and visit the city's other sights.

So keep this weekend free and take part in this nice Barcelona event!

Sieger Show 2010 in Barcelona

On October 8th until October 10th the Nacional Royal Breed Exposition will organize the Sieger Show 2010 in Barcelona for the first time. It is all about the German shepherd, a popular dog not only in Germany.

Besides the Sieger Show 2010 in Barcelona, in which the best German shepherd is crowned after a competition, there will also be a lot of stands with information about animals, for example how to raise a puppy, adequate animal housing and feeding. Dog-owners as well as people without animals who are staying in their Barcelona apartment rental or hotel can visit the Sieger Show 2010 in Barcelona to provide themselves with information.

The Sieger Show 2010 in Barcelona will be held in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, which is located on the Olympic ring, or Anella Olímpica as it's called in Barcelona. It is situated in the Parc de Montjuic, directly next to the Poble Espanyol de Barcelona.

800px-A_Front_Shot_Of_A_German_Shepherd.jpg

If you spend your vacation in Barcelona around October 8th, you should visit the Sieger Show 2010, especially if you like animals and especially dogs a lot! The location in the park offers you more activities you can engage in; you could take a relaxing walk around the park or visit the famous Poble Espanyol. To have a short walking distance, I suggest a Barcelona Hotel in the Sants-Montjuic district of the city.

The closest metro station is the Plaza Espanya, crossed by the red L1 and the green L3 line. From there, you can walk towards the Palau Nacional (and visit it if you want) and then on the right hand towards the park Montjuic.

For owners of a German shepherd it is also possible to enlist their dog to participate in the competition. The inscription prices differ, so if you are interested you should check the official site for details.

In any case, spending your Barcelona holidays on October 8th has a lot of benefits. The beautiful city is worth a visit in every time of the year, so search for a good accommodation in Barcelona and you will experience the charming Barcelona once more!

The Liber International Book Fair 2010 in Barcelona

You don't have the chance to combine your interest in books with the love for travelling very often in your life. But next week, the Liber International Book Fair Barcelona gives you the possibility to book a hotel for your Barcelona holidays and at the same time look for a new book to add to your stash!

It takes places already next week in the Fira de Barcelona at the Plaza Espanya from Wednesday, 29th September until Friday, 1st October. The Plaza Espanya Barcelona is crossed by two lines, the red L1 and the green L3, so you should enter them in order to get to the Liber International Book Fair Barcelona. In the metro, the station is listed as Espanya, not Plaza Espanya so don't let that distract you.

The Liber Book Fair 2010 is very popular for Spain's publishing industry, so everyone interested in reading - private persons or professional persons - shouldn't miss this fair. It is not only highly regarded and important; it has also a lot of activities you can participate in! The best way is to book a central apartment in Barcelona so you can reach the Liber Book Fair Barcelona from walking distance. Hotels in Barcelona near the Plaza Espanya are also a good solution; however, most times are Barcelona apartments cheap in comparison to central hotels.

701px-Gran_Enciclop%C3%A8dia_Catalana.jpgThe Liber International Book Fair Barcelona offers you also the chance to meet your favorite author and attend seminars and a party at the evening! If the party is not want you want, you can also watch the Magic Fountain of Montjuic on Friday, taking place directly at the Plaza Espanya in front of the Palau Nacional Barcelona.
But in any case, you should extend your plans for your holiday in Barcelona for a visit to the Liber Book Fair Barcelona! Next year, it would take place in Madrid (they change yearly the location with each other) so don't miss this chance!

Los Angeles Lakers in Barcelona

Those who think the Barcelona Football club is the only important sports club in Barcelona are wrong! Besides the world-known soccer team, Barcelona is also home of the multiple winners of ABC championships and the Euroleague - Regal FC Barcelona.  This impressing famous basketball team has its home base in the Palau Blaugrana in Barcelona. And although football is usually more popular in Europe, basketball also has a wide fanbase here.

And on Thursday, October 7th, Regal FC Barcelona will meet another legend of basketball:  the Los Angeles Lakers or more commonly known as L.A. Lakers.  You don't want to miss this chance to book your vacation in Spain!

The Lakers belong to the National Basketball Association (NBA) and are the winners of the 2010 NBA finals. Currently they are probably the most important basketball team in the United States, which makes them an impressing opponent for Regal FC Barcelona.

Another interesting fact is that one player of the LA Lakers, Pau Gasol, is originally from Barcelona. It will be sure an interesting match for him, playing against his former home, as well as for visitors who want to enjoy a wonderful event in Barcelona.

fran-vazquez-regal-fc-barcelona.jpgSo in October Barcelona will once again be the centre of attraction when it plays host to a match of two gigants! The friendly match takes places at the Palau Sant Jordi, so you should book your low cost Barcelona apartment already now, so you can walk directly towards the stadium.

To get to the Palau Sant Jordi Barcelona, which is located in the Parc de Montjuic, you should take the L3 (the green line) and step out at Poble Sec or Parallel, or you can also take the L2 (the purple line) and step also out at Parallel. If you don't mind, you can also step out at the Plaza Espanya  (L1 - the red line and L3 - the green line both cross this place) and take a walk through the beautiful city of Barcelona and enjoy the sights you come across.

When the colors of blue and maroon will fight against the colors of purple and gold, which one will win? I, of course, hope that Regal FC Barcelona beats the LA Lakers. But to be fair, may the best one win!

Salon Nautico - Barcelona International Boat Show

Boat owners and those who want to have a boat in the future have now the chance to visit the annual Barcelona International Boat Show, Salon Nautico. The event will take place from November 6th until November 14th at Gran Via and Port Vell for the 49th time this year.

The Salon Nautico Barcelona has of course an ideal location for an International Boat Show because Barcelona is directly at the Mediterranean Sea and offers therefore many possibilities for boat owners.

If you plan to attend the Barcelona International Boat Show at Port Vell, you can walk comfortably from your Ramblas Barcelona Apartment along the famous Las Ramblas towards the harbor. This port is the ninth largest container port in Europe and besides a free trade zone also has the Maremagnum, a really big mall and a multiplex cinema. After the show or before you watch a movie or shop in one of the many different stores at Las Ramblas.

The best way to get to the Port Vell is if you take the L3 (the green one) until Drassanes and then walk towards the sea.

sunsailing_19.jpg

But also the venue at Gran Via offers a great location with a lot of shops and impressing buildings to see. To get to the Gran Via venue it is easiest to use the bus 79 or, if you don't mind walking a little bit to enjoy the beautiful buildings, you can either take the L1 (red one) and step out at Bellvitge or the same line and step out at Santa Eulàlia. Both are more or less the same away from the Gran Via venue.

During the Salon Nautico Barcelona there will be different sections, for professionals as well as private persons. At Port Vell, large vessels like mega-yachts will be displayed, at Gran Via there will be more different displays. Examples include accessories, sailboats, speedboats, paints, a shopping area and many more.

Of course there will also be regattas that are exciting to watch. Don't miss them! But also for smaller visitors the Salon Nautico Barcelona could be very interesting: the Spanish Navy organizes seafaring baptisms for schoolchildren and there are many simulators for sailing or fishing (which also are interesting for adult visitors of course).

And for persons who want to exhibit at the Salon Nautica Barcelona, there is the possibility to book different options. After all, Barcelona is a very popular business centre and according to the fair, more than the half of all boat sales in Spain start at this important fair.

So if you are in a Barcelona hotel or apartment during the 6th and 14th November, you should visit the International Boat Show in Barcelona, as it offers many possibilities for young and old or professional and private!

Cirque du Soleil in Barcelona

If you think that after the summer season there are not many interesting events in Barcelona, you're wrong! Starting from November 5th until December 5th, the famous Cirque du Soleil will be present in Barcelona.

If you book your Barcelona apartment rentals early enough in advance, you can make sure that you find cheap Barcelona apartments that are not overpriced, because the high season is over in November. So take your time and prepare everything soon to avoid any stress that might occur.

The Cirque du Soleil, which means Circus of the Sun, is probably the most famous circus in the world. It was created in 1984 in Quebec, Canada (and not France, as many think) by two street performers. Since then, it has risen to fame during the years. I'm sure you already have heard the name!

Contrary to what comes in your mind when you think of circus, the Cirque du Soleil has no performances of or with animals, which is a huge benefit for many people. Instead, the show offers amazing and breathtaking performances of different (human) artists, with incredibly detailed costumes. The Cirque du Soleil has many different shows, but there is always unbelievable acrobatic artistry, dances inspired from different regions, juggling, balancing and act on the trapezes that are really wonderful to see.

781px-Dralion-Vienna.jpgThe Cirque du Soleil Shows are also always inspired by cultures all over the world and combine traditional customs, myths and legends with fantasy elements, showing peak performances of the acrobats that make you gaze in amazement and wonder about the capabilities of the human body! But don't feel intimidated, it is really a must to see the Cirque du Soleil in Barcelona.

The Show of the Cirque du Soleil in Barcelona is called Varekai and takes place in a fantastic wood with the main character, Icarus, whose name might sound familiar to you. The duration is about three hours, so prepare for that.

Besides their tours and shows, the Cirque du Soleil also releases albums and singles which are quite popular. If you enjoyed the show and music you could buy a CD to have nice souvenir from this event and to remember the great time you spend every time you listen to the music.

So if you in Barcelona or the surrounding and you like exceptional events, you should book your tickets for the Cirque du Soleil in Barcelona early as this popular show is probably sold out fast!

The prices usually range from around 30 € up to around 200€ per ticket, depending on seat and age.

The Cirque du Soleil in Barcelona takes places directly at the beach, at the Grand Chapiteau, at the Plataforma Zoo Marino near the Forum.

You can either enjoy your stay and book a Barcelona hotel that is really close to that, to walk along the beautiful houses and the beach before or after the show.

Or if you are in a Barcelona Hotel in other districts, you can take the metro L4 (the yellow one) and step out at Selva de Mar or Besòs Mar.

Enjoy the Cirque du Soleil in Barcelona and maybe take a romantic walk after the show along the beach!

Since then, Catalonia began and never stopped fighting for its independence. The national day of Catalonia or "La Diada Catalunya" in Catalan was first celebrated in 1980, just after the Spanish government recognized the right of autonomy of Catalonia as a community and the Catalan as an official language.

Barcelona to apply for the 2022 Winter Olympics

In 1992, barcelona was host of the Summer Olympics. Now, the city is applying for the 2022 Winter Olympics and would be the only city worldwide to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

1470279258-olympia-winterspiele-deutsche-sportler_9.jpgThe '92 Summer Olympics were a huge success for the city. Plenty of sports facilities have been built and the appearance of the city has been improved significantly. Since then, the number of sights that resulted from the Olympic Games have grown in Barcelona.

In 1992, the city was flooded with visitors from all over the world. At that time Barcelona hotels and Barcelona apartments were almost booked out due to the high demand for accommodation.

Hosting the Olympic winter games would mean for Barcelona to share the fame with some cities in the Pyrenees. These cities are Molina and Masella and are located approx. 150 km (93 miles) North of Barcelona.

HALLISEY_03.jpgThe decision where the 2022 Olympic Winter Games will take place will be made in five years. If the Olympic Committee accepts the bid of Barcelona, the Mediterranean metropolis will receive 2500 athletics from more than 80 countries competing with each other in a 15 day world sport event.

Barcelona: The City of Ildefons Cerdà

Today, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan and modern city at the Mediterranean Sea. It's roots date far back into the past. One of the major urbanists of Barcelona was Ildefons Cerdà.

Ildefons Cerdà addresses himself to the task of re-designing the city structure due to the growth of the city. Therefore, he designed a new district, which nowadays is known under the name of  "Eixample". From the air, the district can be detected easily due to the squre and straight-line structure. Among the events, you can explore the district by guided tours through the history of Barcelona.

New Years Eve in Barcelona

After the lights and energy of Christmas, it's time to see in the new year. This is an exciting and vibrant time of the year in many faiths and countries around the world. It's a time to forgive and forget and to make those all important resolutions; most importantly, it's a time to start afresh. Experience New Years Eve in a cosmopolitan city and spend your holiday in Barcelona.

Keeping with tradition, the new year celebrations begin by eating twelve grapes, one for every time the clock chimes for midnight. In many Spanish places this is performed outside and the streets are covered with people eating grapes. In Barcelona, it is not seen as necessary to eat the grapes outside and many eat their grapes at home before venturing outside for the big party.

Every club and venue is called into action at this time and usually organizes a special new year party for which tickets are issued in most cases. There are also super-sized parties held in venues across the country and some people choose to hire out their own private venue for a special party of their own. Others may be slightly more intimate and hold a party at their Barcelona accommodation for friends and family only. Although a diminishing tradition, some people wait to see the sun rise over a beach. Traditional food associated with 640_0.jpgnew year is "churros", a finger or banana shaped pastry and hot chocolate. During the New Years Eve time you can still find a lot of available Barcelona hotels and Barcelona apartments.

The first week of the new year is dedicated to children. On the night before the 5th January, the three kings - Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar, disembark their ship at the harbour and there is a grand parade through the town with the kings and their pages - another opportunity for the children to get involved. The kings are then left alone in the city to hide presents. It is customary to write a letter to the kings and request specific presents although they may like to throw in a few little surprises.

These traditions are not all necessarily followed to the letter although the majority will participate, especially in the precession of the kings. In Barcelona Christmas is accepted as a time for having fun with friends and most importantly family.
