Pinchos in Barcelona

pinchosA pintxo (pronounced pintcho) is a small slice of bread on which to place a small ration of food. They are traditionally found in bars in the Spanish Basque Country.
Celebrations and rallies in the Basque Country are pretexts for cooking competitions between neighborhoods, villages, towns, gastronomic societies or friends. Thus, the tapas and pinchos have developed. Bars in Donostia (San Sebastian) as in all the Basque Country rivals ingenuity to create the best pinchos and win various competitions for the delight of residents and tourists of course.

Enjoy a bit of Basque culture during your weekend in Barcelona meanwhile the Catalan one, seize this great oportunity!

The pintxoak are arranged on plates spread all over the counter, and are payable to the unit. We find all sorts, composed of various natural products, grilled, fried or cooked in sauce: fish, crustaceans, shellfish, sausage, meat, vegetables ... etc.
In bars, on each pincho is placed a small stick (palillo in Castilian) to count the small sticks held by each customer and calculate the amount payable at the end of the meal.

Enjoy your holiday in Barcelona!

Tibidabo

If you plan to spend your vacation in Spain and you wonder where to stay, we recommend you an apartment in Barcelona, where you definitely enjoy your days to the fullest. You can go, for instance, to the mountain Tibidabo. From your hotel in Barcelona, you can get to Tibidabo by metro very easy.

Tibidabo.jpgEven the drive will be a special adventure for the whole family. You have to take the metro L7 and descend at the final station, and then you have to change to the old blue tram which was by the way the only one in whole Barcelona for a long time. After that a rack railway will bring you up the final meters to the mountain.

With its 529 meters the Tibidabo is the highest mountain in Barcelona and from there you will have a gorgeous view about the city and you can even see Montserrat.
If you are finally there a lot of attraction will wait for you. On the mountain there is an old adventure park with a big wheel, rollercoaster and chair plane and a lot of other attractions. So you could enjoy the view and have some fun.

For those who are not into action they can visit the curch Sagrada Corazón which has been built after the ideal of the French sacre- couer. It was finished in 1962
and it is crowned by a bronze statue of Jesus that is directed to the sea.

The third attraction is an observation deck - the Torre de Colserolla. The television tower, which is on this platform, was built due to the Olympic Games in 1992 and which is 268 meters high.
So during your stay, you should visit this place because it is really worth it. It is an attraction for everyone and it doesn´t matter if you like action or just like to enjoy the view.

Feria de Abril 2011

The upcoming 40th April Fair in Barcelona lasts 9 days from the 29th of April until the 9th of May 2011 in the Forum Park at Diagonal Mar.

The fair´s origin is from Andalusia as it always takes place in Seville. The traditional festival is the perfect possibility to explore the traditional dances, foods, fashion and accessories from southern Spain.

feria de abril barcelona 2011.jpgThe entrance is totally free and provides you not only with culture but also with typical Andalusia cuisine, such as fried green peppers, the so called "pimientos del padron", fried anchovies (boquerones fritos), fried squid jamon (Spanish ham), torradas (big slices of bread, dressed with olive oil and tomato juice).

The fair consists of many attractions like the "casetas" which means little houses but actually being tents built on the fairground area. They amount 60 to 70 and are composed of different organizations and groups from banks to political parties and private organizations. In those tents you will find people partying, eating, singing and dancing "Sevillanas", the traditional dance of Andalusia. In this dancing everyone is involved from grandchildren to grandparents, and is costumed traditionally. The men wear the "traje de corto" ( short jacket, tight trousers and boots) and the ladies wear "faralaes" or "trajes de flamenco", which is a flamenco style dress. Between dances the Spanish families sit together at big tables eating tapas, jerez cherry and manzanilla and drinking wine. In addition some concerts with famous singers and bands also take part in the Feria de Abril.

If you are wondering where to stay during this time, we recommend you to book an apartment in Barcelona or a hotel in Barcelona. You will have beside the fair many attractions to visit in this beautiful and extraordinary city.

The Feria de Abril is easy accessible. The nearest metro station to the Feria is Maresme / Forum on Yellow L4.  There will be a special metro timetable during Feria de Abril with extended opening times on metro lines L1, L2, L3, L4 and L11. There are also several bus lines going to this direction, like the line 7, line 36, line 41, line 43 and line 141. An additional line between Plaza Catalunya and Parc de Forum, will be imported during some days of the fair.

Sitges Beaches

Have you thought about spending your summer holidays in Costa Daurada? If you prefer spending your holidays at one of the most popular beaches, I recommend you to book an accommodation in Sitges . In this town with 26.000 habitants and only 35 kilometers from Barcelona, you can go to 17 different clean and sandy beaches.

Sitges.jpgDid you knew that Sitges is also called the St. Tropez of Spain? This is due to the property prices which are similar to the most expensive European cities. Another reason for this is the setting of the sea and the surrounding of the Parc Natural de Garraf. The seaside village Garraf is located between Sitges and Castellfels.Compared to the other beaches of Barcelona, it is the most quiet one and there for an ideal place for families, as it is already famous among local families. You will also find there nice restaurants with a view on the bay.

In general, the beaches of Sitges are lively, clean and busy. You are likely to feel relaxed on all of Sitges's beaches. With an apartment in Sitges you can easily bring a parasol and make sure that you bring your sun cream. The beaches provide very little natural shade and in the summer months the sun is very strong.

beaches of sitges.jpgIf you are looking for particular beaches, you may also be able to find what you want. Besides to the family beaches, sitges has gay-friendly and nudist beaches. Below I listed all of the beaches in Sitges, providing more detailed information.

List of all beaches in Sitges:

Platja Sant Sebastiá

This beach is popular amongst all groups of people. It stands more on its own than the beaches at the other side of the church.

Platja de la Fragata

Most popular beach with families and overlooked by the town's whitewashed church. For the children there are volleyball nets and pedalo to hire.

Platja de la Ribera

One of the large beaches, which is busy as it is close to the town. It is for any kind of group.

Platja d'Aiguadolç

Sitges' most eastern beach. it is popular with both nudists and those in swimwear.

Platja dels Balmains

One of the three beaches that is to the east of the Sitges Church. It is mostly nudist and offers a great view with mountains.

Platja de la Rodona

The town's main gay beach which is always very busy.

Platja de l'Estanyol

Another long and busy beach, popular with all groups of people.

Platja de la Riera Xica

A rather narrow and long beach. It is popular with all groups.

Platja de la Barra

This beach is slightly more of a cove and is towards the edge of town so it can often be less crowded than the more central beaches. It is popular with all groups.

Platja de Terramar

Another slightly less bust beach due to its location and due to the distance from the city centre. It is popular with all groups.

Platja de les Anquines

A beach, which is small and in a cove. A good option if you are looking for some peace and quiet. It is popular with all groups.

How to get to Sitges

Sitges is very close to the Barcelona International Airport. During the high season, you can catch a train from the Barcelona Sants station. You don´t need to buy tickets in advance, since as many as 4 trains leave every hour. Catch the train at the Passeig de Gràcia metro station towards "Vilanova / St Vicenç." It will take you approximately 25 minutes to reach Sitges beaches by train.

FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2010 - Battle of the Giants

Twice a year, there is a football game in Spain which is one of the most important and legendary games, the match FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2010, the battle of the giants. And on 29th November 2010 the match will take place in the famous Camp Nou Barcelona. Buy the FC Barcelona tickets along with a nice Barcelona holiday rental Camp Nou already now, so you don't miss it!

News: The date of the match was delayed because of the Catalan parliament elections taking place on the 28th November.

Because of this, El Clasico 2010 - the match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid takes place at Monday, November 29th. Prepare for that and enjoy this incredible football game!

El Clásico or the Classic, as this match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is called, dates back to 1902, when the first match between these football legends occurred. The Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona rivalry is therefore very old and the two football clubs regularly compete against each other in order to determine who the best team of Spain is. The Barcelona against Madrid matches can also be seen as a match between Catalonia and the rest of Spain.

Casillas_and_Puyol_by_Sandman888.jpgDuring the time of the matches, Barcelona will be visited by many fans wanting to see the highly anticipated football game, not only from Spain, but also from the whole world! A perfect occasion for a short trip holiday in Barcelona of course. If you have the FC Barcelona tickets, it is wise to choose a Barcelona holiday rental close to the Camp Nou Stadium, as you can be sure that metros and other public transports are full. I suggest Barcelona hotels or apartments in Les Corts, because from there, you have a walking distance to the stadium. So a Barcelona Apartment Camp Nou is the best way to enjoy the match the most.

But of course, also Barcelona visitors who do not get the chance to purchase a ticket for Camp Nou can enjoy the match; the FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2010 game will be showed on big screens throughout the city. In any case, during your Barcelona holiday you will experience the city pulsating and vibrating. And besides the game, there is a lot to see and to do in Barcelona.

800px-Camp_nou_m%C3%A8s_que_un_club_by_Andrea_Buratti.jpgThe last football game between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona was in April 2010, with FC Barca as the clear winner scoring 0-2. Another famous piece of Barcelona's pride was the game against Real Madrid in May 2009, where FC Barca won and scored 6 goals!

So this El Clasico match of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid 2010 is really a must, whether you like football or not! The atmosphere in the city cannot be described, with numerous after parties (no matter how the results are) and an anticipating exaction. Don't hesitate and plan your Barcelona hotel or apartment near Camp Nou now, for a weekend of unique events!

The unfinished symbol of Barcelona

sagrada familia.jpgOne of the most famous sights and probably the symbol of Barcelonian architecture is the massive Roman Catholic Church Sagrada Familiawhich has been under construction since 1882.

The church was designed by the famous Catalonian artist Antonio Gaudi who dedicated 40 years to this project. It is supposed to be finished by 2026. Sagrada Familia is very rich in Christian symbols due to Gaudi intending to build the "last great sanctuary of Christendom". Its 18 tall towers symbolize the Twelve Apostels, the 4 Evangelists, the Virgin Mary and the tallest of all Jesus Christ.

The construction of this unique project is financed through private investors (Roman Catholic church as well as the government do not fund this project) and the money spent by visitors on entrance and funding. More than 2, 26 Million people have already visited the Sagrada Familia and it does not seem to become less.
Opening hours are from October - March from 9am to 6pm and from April - September from 9am to 8pm. General entrance fee lies at 11€.

If you want to stay in the nice neighborhood of the Sagrada Familie during your stay in Barcelona, the best apartment to choose would be the Eixample Sagrada Familia Apartment.

Studying in Barcelona

I think everyone who watched the movie" L'auberge espagnol" thought to himself: wouldn't it be great to live and study in Barcelona for a while, a semester maybe. Take your chance and just spent wonderful 6-12 months in one of the several universities in Barcelona. You can choose between 5 universities, University of Barcelona, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Pampeu Fabra University and the Polytechnic University of Catalunya. Here you go with some information about the most well known ones:

University of Barcelona

The public university with campuses all over Barcelona was founded in 1450 already. The university consists of 18 different faculties with all kinds of areas you can study in. Your lectures can either be in Spanish, Catalan or English depending on what you are studying but make sure you know that Catalan is the major language in administration etc before coming to Barcelona.

Ramon Llull University

This private university was founded in 1990 and is probably best known for its famous business faculty ESADE. Right now about 14.000 students are enrolled. Most faculties are located within the city.

Autonomous University Barcelona

This university is situated in the metropolitan area of Barcelona in a suburb called Bellaterra. It consists of 50 departments with 11 faculties while more than 100 postgraduate programmes are offered to students. UAB gathers more than 50.000 students. It is well known for its research qualities.

If you looking for a flat in Barcelona to study at one of the universities it is probably the best thing to stay in one of the Barcelona apartments first and search for flats while you are here already instead on trusting pictures in the internet.

Chupitos en Barcelona

chupito.gifA bar that you definitely should visit during your stay in Barcelona is the „Chupito Bar"in Calle d'Aribau in Eixample. Chupito means as much as shot and believe me this bar has a lot of shots. Different variations such as "The General" or "Monica Lewinsky" are served out of 200 possible shots. Not only the shots are worth passing by there but the show in general will be spectacular. The staff goes as far as to light the bar on fire or dress up in costumes.

The bar is definitely a good start for a long night if you don't mind crowds and younger people.
If you want to taste all 200 shots, the best place to stay would be directly next to it in the Viladomat Apartmentchupito.gif.

Don't miss trying it!

Spending a day in the Green

parc güell.jpg

Parc Güell

Situated in the district of Gràcia, designed by the architect Gaudi and part of the UNESCO World Heritage, Park Güell is probably the most famous park in Barcelona. It can be reached by metro or bus (the town's touristic bus tours are also coming to the park). The entrance to the park is free and from there you have a beautiful sight over all of Barcelona. The park is marked with colourful mosaics on benches, stairs and walls. Different animals such as snakes and saurians are lining the buildings. The park was designed on behalf of the manufacturer Eusebi Güell who loved the parks he has seen in England and wanted the same for Barcelona. Best access to the park is given if you sleep in one of the apartments in Gracia such as the Goya Loft penthouse.

Parc de la Ciutadella

This park is located in the city centre and includes the Barcelona Zoo, several museums and a huge fountain. The park was named after the citadel, a fortress located on the outskirts where King Philips V kept control over the people of Barcelona. The symbol of central government was nearly destroyed in the 19th century. Only the chapel, the governor's palace and the arsenal, now hosting the Catalan parliament survived the demolishment. At the northern corner of the park, the Cascada is located, an triumphal arch with waterfall and fountain to built for the Universal exhibition in 1888 hosted by Barcelona.

Montjuic

The Montjuic is not only famous because you have the best view over the town, hosted the Olympic games in 1992 and the world exhibition in 1929 but also because of its wonderful parks all over the mountain. The museu nacional is situated on this mountain and shows off some of the best artists in Catalunya. It is also home to a huge castle and the museum of the famous catalan artist Joan Miró. The castle is especially famous for all the activists, politicians and socialist executed during the Franco regime. The beautiful apartment Magalhaes Poble Sec Apartment is the best opportunity when you want to be close to this famous sight of Barcelona.

parc güell barcelona.jpgYou always wanted to come and live in Barcelona? You have a compulsory internship semester or just some spare time during your summer holidays in front of you? Then why not combine both things and start an internship in Barcelona, one of the nicest cities in Europe- young, vivid, loud and exciting.

As Barcelona has one of the biggest tourism industries in the country you will have no problem finding an internship in this area of studies. Tourist agencies, restaurants, hotels and language schools are spread around the whole town and offer probably the perfect working atmosphere for you to make your life in Barcelona unforgettable.
Even though we always thinks of holidays, tapas and beach at first when we think of Barcelona, the city is nevertheless home to several major companies employing hundreds of people living here and being able to offer you an internship. Such well-known companies are not only SEAT which has internships open during the whole year but also Agilent Technologies, Chupa Chups the famous sweets producer, different huge banks such as Banco Sabadell, Caixa as well as offices of Mango, Inditex and many more.

You have your internship position in Barcelona and just need a place to stay? Congratulations, because this might be the biggest obstacle during your time in Barcelona. The best way to begin the quest for a flat is to stay in one of the widespread Barcelona apartments or Barcelona hotels. From there on you have the chance to look at all the available flat (usually shared ones) in and around Barcelona. One of the major differences especially between the countries like France/Germany and Spain is the size of the rooms. Rooms within a flat in the town are usually not bigger than 9m² and yes you do have to pay nearly 400€ for this which is very normal in Barcelona. Furthermore due to the high prices of flats in the town many older couples or singles offer parts of their apartments for rent so do not be shocked by that and do not immediately sort those ones out of your list of possible apartments. Take your time and visit as many flats as you can- in the end, everybody will find one that suits him.

Apartments in Barcelona

Visitors who want to stay in Barcelona for their holidays should consider the alternative of booking a Barcelona apartment instead of an hotel.
Indeed, this solution is often less expensive, especially for families or groups.
I know one Barceloneta apartment, just near the beach. The pretty building with its warm Mediterranean colors already catches the interest. With a capacity of 5 sleeps in one master bedroom and one other double bedroom, it's perfect for family or small groups. The kitchen is fully equipped, the bathroom has a shower and the pretty living/dinning room has TV and 2 little balconies.
I think this is really the best way to stay in the city and to visit barcelona. Moreover, the district of La Barceloneta is really pleasant with all its barcelona restaurants.
