Santa Maria del Mar, Barcelona

Santa maria del mar.jpgIf you are in the Bario Gotico district for a walk or for a visit of the Picasso Museum, come to the church of Santa Maria Del Mar during your holidays in Barcelona.

You can even book a Barcelona accommodation in this area which is really nice with its small pedestrian streets and the advantage to spend your holiday in an apartment in Barcelona in this area is that it is really central and close to all the activities.

The church of Santa Maria Del Mar, that is to say the church Saint Mary of the Sea is located in the historic district of Barcelona, the gothic district, close to the sea.

The edifice was built from 1329 on the direction of Berenger de Montagut, when the Ribera was expanded. In the XIVth century, the residents of the district were rich merchants. Whereas most of the church was built in more than one century, the construction of the church of Santa Maria del Mar took just 55 years.

Unfortunately, in 1428 an earthquake shook the city of Barcelona and the church of Santa Maria Del Mar was destroyed. The church was built again in the XVth century.

The church of Santa Maria Del Mar is considered as one of the most beautiful church. The exterior of the church is quite simple in comparison with the other edifices of Barcelona like the Sagrada Familia. But the church is really sophisticated. When you enter in the church of Santa Maria Del Mar, the columns which are wide apart give an impression of bulk and immensity. Only the glass windows give some colors. Don't miss the rose window of the cathedral of the Ribera.

If you are lucky to stay in a Barcelona accommodation, you will be able to discover this typical area of Barcelona. The Born district offers a lot of fashion and bobo shops and small restaurants. You could also continue your walk by the visit of the Picasso Museum which is really close to the church of Santa Maria Del Mar.

Enjoy your holiday in your Barcelona accommodation.

Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona

If you walk slowly from the Sagrada Familia on the Avinguda de Gaudí, after around 4 crossroads, you will encounter another masterpiece of Barcelona's architecture: the Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona.

399px-StPau-Administracio-fa%C3%A7ana-7179sh_by_Amadalvarez_CC3.jpgThe Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona was built from 1901 and 1930 with designs from Lluis Domenech i Montaner, who also designed the Palau de la Musica Barcelona. And indeed you can see the similarity of style that both buildings possess. Today is the Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona with the Palau de la Musica a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been used as a hospital until 2009. If you plan to spend your holidays in Barcelona, you should not forget this masterpiece of architecture and style when you stay in your Barcelona accommodation. The Hospital Sant Pau is often overlooked by many, but is absolutely worth a visit.

Although at the moment tours are not available due to restorative works being done, the Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona is nevertheless worth a visit. The architectural work is detailed and fascinating to observe, from the inside as well as from the outside, so also the façade of the Hospital Sant Pau in Barcelona is worth the attention. If you book Barcelona accommodation near the hospital, you can even see it as often as you want.

The World Heritage hospital is located in the Horta-Guinardo district of Barcelona, in the north of the city. It is easy to access during holidays in Barcelona, as there are different metro stations and busses near the hospital. This makes the hospital one of the sights in Barcelona with a good connection, an important factor when staying in your Barcelona accommodation.

To reach the Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona, you can take the blue metro line L5 and step out at Sant Pau (Dos de Maig), or you can take the yellow line L4 and step out at Guinardo.

In order to reach the hospital sight by bus, you can take the following bus lines in Barcelona: 15, 19, 20, 35, 45, 47, 50, 51, 92, 117 or 192.

But what I recommend you if you like to walk around the beautiful architecture of Barcelona with its nice streets and avenues during your holidays in Barcelona, is to start your tour at the Sagrada Familia and then walk towards the Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona. This way, you can enjoy two sights in Barcelona in one tour, because the distance between the two sights (which are both UNESCO World Heritages Sites) is very small.

450px-Atri_Hospital_Sant_Pau_01_by_Vicens_CC3.jpgTo kill two birds with a stone and enjoy two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one walk, you should take the blue L5 metro line or the purple L2 line and step out at the Sagrada Familia Barcelona. Then, after admiring Gaudi's masterpiece with its fascinating architecture, go to the Avinguda Gaudi, directly next to the Sagrada Familia. It is the avenue lined with trees at is sites, running diagonally and crossed by Carrer de la Marina and Carrer de Provença (there is also a gas station, as a help).

Then you can walk comfortably along the wide street, passing cute and nice shops, restaurants and bars, maybe also stop by and enjoy some tapas.

After around 4 crossways, you will reach the Hospital Sant Pau Barcelona and can admire another one of Barcelona's many sights during your stay in Barcelona accommodation!

Arc de Triomf Barcelona

During your stay in accommodation in Barcelona you have the chance to visit a lot of different sights, and when you plan to stroll around the Poblenou and El Borne area in Barcelona, you can also visit the famous Arc de Triomf in Barcelona.

The Arc de Triomf is, like the name suggests, a triumphal arch in Barcelona with interesting architecture and style. It was built by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas for the Universal Exhibition in 1888 and is made of red brick and detailed ornaments, with an inscription reading Barcelona welcomes the nations.

782px-ArcodeltriunfoBCN_by_Elemaki_GNU.jpgWhen booking an apartment in Barcelona near the Arc de Triomf, you not only have the benefit of staying in accommodation in Barcelona directly near the famous sight in Barcelona, but you also have a metro station of the same name near you. This makes it an excellent idea for Barcelona holidays in Spain, especially because you can use the Arc de Triomf Barcelona as a starting point for a small tour around the city.

To get to the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona, the easiest way is to have accommodation in Barcelona in an apartment in Barcelona near the Arc de Triomf, but of course you can reach this wonderful triumphal arch by means of public transport.

The most convenient solution is to take the red metro line L1 and step out at Arc de Triomf metro station in Barcelona, because you will directly see the impressing monument when you leave the metro.

If you prefer to take the bus, you can use the lines 39, 40, 41, 42, 51 and 141 and step out at Passeig de Lluís Companys-Arc de Triomf. It will be hard not to miss this station, because the bus stop is next to the Arc de Triomf and you can see it early enough in advance!

If you decide to see the beautiful Arc de Triomf Barcelona during your stay in an apartment in Barcelona, let me give you my personal recommendation for a tour around Arc de Triomf. It is a nice suggestion, because you can see many breathtaking sights in Barcelona in one walk or tour, which saves you a lot of time.

So for the Arc de Triomf walking tour in Barcelona, we use the of course the Arc de Triomf Barcelona as our starting point. If you don't stay in an apartment in Barcelona near Arc de Triomf, make sure to get from your accommodation in Barcelona to the triumphal arch with the transport system you prefer, as mentioned above.

800px-Spain_Catalonia_Barcelona_Arc_Trionf_Escultura_1_Josep_Reyn%C3%A9s_by_Year_of_the_Dragon_GNU_CC3.jpgAs one of the most intriguing sights in Barcelona, you should take your time and explore the details of the façade of the Arc de Triomf, which is very detailed, with different sculptures and ornaments. It is really impressing to stand directly beneath the arch and look up fully acknowledging the impressive height of the sight.

Next to that, you can enjoy a comfortable walk along the promenade that starts at the Arc de Triompf. The promenade is lined by palm trees and you can often see people from young to old sitting on the sides and enjoying life. In summer, sometimes there are concerts held on this promenade.

After strolling around the pleasant walk and passing a wonderful statue with an angel on top of it, you will stand in front of the Parc de la Ciutadella (you might want to read my article about the Parc de la Ciutadella Barcelona to know what you can admire in this park), which is a green sanctuary and a famous sight on its own.

Replenish your health and sit down on one of the many benches or even on the green grass if you prefer. You can visit the famous fountain in the Parc de la Ciutadella, the Catalan Parliament or even the Barcelona Zoo, which all of which are located within the boundaries of this park.

When you like to see even more, after you enjoyed the park, you can use the exit next to the entrance to the Barcelona Zoo and take a walk on the Passeig de Colom, which will lead you along beautiful buildings with impressive architecture to the famous statue of Christopher Columbus, at the end of Las Ramblas.
