Tomato bread recipe - Pan con Tomate

When you ever have been to Barcelona and the surrounding Costa Brava or Costa Dorada during your Barcelona holidays, you will probably have noticed the delicious little breads served with almost every dinner: the famous tomato breads, or pan con tomate (pa amb tomàquet) as it is called here.

800px-Pan_con_Tumaca_by_Javier_Lastras_CC2.jpgThey are delicious and easy to make, and if you are in any restaurant or bar during your Barcelona holidays you cannot miss them. And although there are as many different versions as there are towns and cities in Catalonia, the basic components are always the same: bread, rubbed with a tomato and spiced with olive oil and salt. If you have the chance to cook for yourself during your Barcelona holidays, definitely try this recipe!

Tomato bread or pan con tomate can be seen as a kind of staple food, you can add different cold cuts and use it as a breakfast or even combine more ingredients like salmon (Barcelona's location directly at the Mediterranean Coast gives you an excellent opportunity to try out the delicious seafood and fishes!) and a lot of vegetables to make a whole dinner for a perfect evening during your Barcelona holidays.

You can store the tasty snacks in the fridge of your apartment in Barcelona easily, so let me here give you the basic tomato bread recipe for delicious pan con tomate:

Ingredients:

-          bread slices (as many as you want)

-          1 half tomato per bread slice, as ripe and soft as possible

-          olive oil

-          salt

-          optional: garlic or jamón

With these few ingrediences you can start the preparation. Take a bread slice and scrub it with a half tomato, until it is covered fully. Then sprinkle a little bit (or more if you prefer) of olive oil and salt over the bread and then put it in the oven for about 10 minutes or less, depending on you if you prefer a crunchy or a more soft version.

538px-Jamon_Iberico_on_Passeig_de_Gracia_Barcelona_by_Evan_CC2.jpgAdditionally you can use a baguette instead of normal bread or the barbecue instead of the oven. It is also possible to include garlic or jamon bacon, or vegetables or fish. In any case, no Barcelona holidays are complete without tasting the tomato bread and its variations.

You see, the diversity of making tomato bread or pan con tomate makes it a very versatile dish. It can be as simple as you want, but also as extravagant as you want. The basic version is perfect for students and for you, if you need a little snack in your apartment in Barcelona in between interesting sightseeing tours.

Did you know that most traditional dishes were originally "poor people's food"? The same applies for Barcelona tomato bread; in the past people used old bread rests and overripe tomatoes to avoid wasting precious food. But today it is a popular dish in all places of Barcelona and the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada, and you should definitely try out the tomato bread recipe for pan con tomate during your stay in an apartment in Barcelona!
