Barcelona: The City of Ildefons Cerdà

Today, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan and modern city at the Mediterranean Sea. It's roots date far back into the past. One of the major urbanists of Barcelona was Ildefons Cerdà.

Ildefons Cerdà addresses himself to the task of re-designing the city structure due to the growth of the city. Therefore, he designed a new district, which nowadays is known under the name of  "Eixample". From the air, the district can be detected easily due to the squre and straight-line structure. Also, the architecture of the houses have a special Cerdà style, which you can even explore yourself while staying in a Barcelona apartment or directly in an apartment in Eixample.

150 years after the restructure of the city, Barcelona wants to pay tribute to its "father". Thus, there is an extensive year programme organized by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània and the Museu d'Historià in 2010. Among the events, you can explore the district by guided tours through the history of Barcelona.
