Barcelona to apply for the 2022 Winter Olympics

In 1992, barcelona was host of the Summer Olympics. Now, the city is applying for the 2022 Winter Olympics and would be the only city worldwide to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Plenty of sports facilities have been built and the appearance of the city has been improved significantly. Since then, the number of sights that resulted from the Olympic Games have grown in Barcelona.

In 1992, the city was flooded with visitors from all over the world. At that time Barcelona hotels and Barcelona apartments were almost booked out due to the high demand for accommodation.

Hosting the Olympic winter games would mean for Barcelona to share the fame with some cities in the Pyrenees. These cities are Molina and Masella and are located approx. 150 km (93 miles) North of Barcelona.

HALLISEY_03.jpgThe decision where the 2022 Olympic Winter Games will take place will be made in five years. If the Olympic Committee accepts the bid of Barcelona, the Mediterranean metropolis will receive 2500 athletics from more than 80 countries competing with each other in a 15 day world sport event.

Barcelona: The City of Ildefons Cerdà

Today, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan and modern city at the Mediterranean Sea. It's roots date far back into the past. One of the major urbanists of Barcelona was Ildefons Cerdà.

Ildefons Cerdà addresses himself to the task of re-designing the city structure due to the growth of the city. Therefore, he designed a new district, which nowadays is known under the name of  "Eixample". From the air, the district can be detected easily due to the squre and straight-line structure. Also, the architecture of the houses have a special Cerdà style, which you can even explore yourself while staying in a Barcelona apartment or directly in an apartment in Eixample.

150 years after the restructure of the city, Barcelona wants to pay tribute to its "father". Thus, there is an extensive year programme organized by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània and the Museu d'Historià in 2010. Among the events, you can explore the district by guided tours through the history of Barcelona.

"Museum City" Barcelona

For many visitors the metropolis at the Mediterranean is a destination to enjoy summer, sun and beach. Others however, prefer to discover what is behind the "tourist curtain". that is especially the culture of the region, as well as the history of the city and it's citizens.

Seafood: Local delicacy from Barcelona

Barcelona and its surrounding coasts, the Costa Brava and the Costa Dorada, are famous for their seafood.

Seafood belongs to the local cuisine like Tapas or "Pan con Tomate". Often, these traditional dishes are combined with each other and can be considered as a part of the Catalan culture. Those of you who would like to explore more, should take a trip from your Barcelona apartment or your Barcelona hotel to the city center or the Barcelonaeta area.

Barceloneta is the district right next to the harbour and the beach. There, you will be able to find plenty of fish and seafood restaurants. They often offer also traditional and international delicacies. Just take metro line 4 to the same-named station "Barceloneta" and walk along the harbour promenade.

While enjoying your meal, you can take a look upon the beach area - simply a perfect location. Of course, fish and seafood are the specialties on the menu. If you would like to enjoy a nice view combined with great food a reservation is advisable, because the restaurant is not an insiders' tip anymore.

Shopping Guide Barcelona

Barcelona is not only a holiday destination for culture enthusiasts and sunseekers. Since years, the city has developed and has become a major destination for shopping tourists.

Today, the city even hosts big fashion events and trade shows.  Popular brands have also settled down in the Mediterranean metropolis. Taking a walk from your Barcelona Hotel or your Barcelona apartment along the Passeig de Gracia, you will find plenty of famous brands.

Those who like it more inexpensive should take trip to the old city center or the Gracia area in the North of the city. There, you can find small shops that are dating back decades waiting for your visit. These little "tiendas" are part of the whole Gracia district with its unique charme. From traditional Spanish fashion to modern accesiores, you will find everything the heart desires.

Are you more into interesting shops that are located close to each other? If yes, you should take walk through the Diagonal Mar shopping mall. There, you can find also prestigeous shops, electronic shops as well as a wide choice of  restaurants. After an exhausting day in the mall you can relax at the nearby beach! That's Barcelona!

Fundació Joan Miró: Museum of a world famous artist from Barcelona

Visitors appreciate especially the diverse culture, when they come to Barcelona.The city is home of several world famous musicians and artists. One of those, is Joan Miró.
