Barcelona has taken over the fourth position in the European Union for the best cities to do business. "The economic environment of the city of Barcelona is one of the best in its history", commented Jordi Portabella, the deputy to the major. In studies taken from the Barcelona Observatory, an analysis that compares the international competitiveness of the city, Barcelona has the highest placing in Spain and the fourth in Europe. Thanks to growth in foreign investment, the organization of conventions, arrivals in the airport, and in tourists, Barcelona has risen in the rankings. In 2006, the city's record was broken for inscriptions in social security with 1,058,000 workers and more importantly, the job market for information technology grew substantially. Looking to the future, the arrival of the high speed train (AVE), the expansion of the airport, and the reform of the port area are all vital to the economic growth of Barcelona.
