Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona

In 1869 when general Prim announced that the area taken up by the loathed Bourbon citadel could be reclaimed for public use, the city's joy was boundless. Soon the park become the site of the 1888 Exhibition; Domènech i Montaner's Castell de Tres Dragons at the entrance served as the cafeteria, while the Arc de Triomf to the north formed the main entrance. Prim is honoured with a large equestrian statue at the south end.
Surprinsingly extensive, the park also contains a host of attractions: the zoo, the Natural History Museum, a boating lake and an array of imaginative statuary. Beside the lake is the cascade, an ornamental fountain on which young Gaudi worked as assistant to Josep fontseré's Umbracle. Not to be missed are Fontseré's Umbracle and the elegant Hivernacle (winter garden).
The parc de la Ciutadella is located in a very nice and centric area of Barcelona, in Passeig Picasso (metro Arc de Triomf or Barceloneta).
